Key West After Dark: Best Bars, Bites, and Sunsets

Key West doesn’t just welcome the night—it celebrates it. This tiny island at the end of the Overseas Highway has perfected the art of the evening, blending spectacular sunsets with cold drinks, live music, and a laid-back vibe you won’t find anywhere else in Florida. Whether you’re looking for a quiet waterfront cocktail or want to dive into Duval Street’s famous bar scene, Key West after dark delivers.

Start at Mallory Square for Sunset Celebration

Every evening, two hours before sunset, Mallory Square transforms into Key West’s nightly street festival. Jugglers, musicians, artists, and performers gather along the waterfront as crowds assemble to watch the sun drop into the Gulf of Mexico. It’s a Key West tradition that’s been going strong for decades, and it’s completely free.

Arrive early to claim a good spot along the seawall. The performers are talented and entertaining—fire breathers, tightrope walkers, and trained cats all make appearances. Street vendors sell handmade jewelry and art. As the sun touches the horizon, the crowd erupts in applause, a ritual that feels both touristy and genuinely magical.

If you prefer a sunset with a drink in hand, head to the rooftop bar at Ocean Key Resort or grab a table at Latitudes on Sunset Key (accessible only by boat from the Key West marina). Both offer unobstructed views without the Mallory Square crowds.

Duval Street: The Heart of Key West Nightlife

Once the sun sets, Duval Street lights up. This mile-long strip runs from the Gulf to the Atlantic and packs in more bars per block than almost anywhere in America. Start at the northern end near Truman Avenue and work your way south, or vice versa—there’s no wrong direction.

Sloppy Joe’s on Duval claims to be Ernest Hemingway’s favorite bar (though several Key West establishments make that claim). The bar opened in 1933, and today it’s a raucous, tourist-friendly spot with live music starting in the afternoon and going until 2 a.m. Order a mojito or a rum runner and soak in the energy.

Captain Tony’s Saloon, just off Duval on Greene Street, was the original Sloppy Joe’s location and has a grittier, more authentic feel. The ceiling is covered in business cards and bras, the floor is uneven, and the bartenders pour strong drinks. Hemingway really did drink here back in the 1930s.

For a quieter, more sophisticated vibe, try The Porch at the Perry Hotel on Stock Island, about 10 minutes from downtown. It’s off the main drag but worth the short drive for craft cocktails and views over the marina.

Live Music and Local Flavor

Key West’s music scene is one of its best-kept secrets. Beyond the cover bands on Duval, you’ll find talented singer-songwriters and jazz musicians tucked into smaller venues.

The Green Parrot Bar on Whitehead Street has been pouring drinks since 1890 and books excellent local and touring musicians. It’s a dive bar in the best sense—pool tables, strong pours, and a crowd that includes locals, artists, and travelers who stumbled in and decided to stay.

Hog’s Breath Saloon, right on the water at the end of Front Street, offers live music on an outdoor stage with views of the harbor. The motto is “Hog’s Breath is better than no breath at all,” and the grouper sandwich is legitimately good.

For something completely different, check out Virgilio’s on Applerouth Lane. This small, upscale spot serves Italian cuisine and often features live jazz in an intimate setting far removed from Duval’s party atmosphere.

Late-Night Bites Worth Staying Up For

After a few drinks, you’ll want food. Key West delivers on late-night dining better than most small towns.

El Siboney on Catherine Street serves authentic Cuban food until 9:30 p.m. The ropa vieja and lechon asado are both excellent, and the portions are huge. It’s cash-only and always packed—arrive before 8 p.m. if possible.

If you’re out past midnight, head to 5 Brothers Grocery on Southard Street. This Cuban market makes massive sandwiches until 3 a.m. The pan con lechon (roast pork sandwich) with a side of tostones will soak up whatever you’ve been drinking.

Blue Heaven in Bahama Village serves brunch, lunch, and dinner in a garden setting where Hemingway once refereed boxing matches. The Key lime pie here is legendary, and you can order it at the walk-up window even after the kitchen closes.

Practical Tips for Key West Nights

Parking downtown is limited and expensive. Walk, rent a bike, or take a pedicab—Key West is small enough that most everything is within a mile. Drink responsibly and pace yourself; the tropical heat and strong pours catch up quickly.

Duval Street can get loud and crowded, especially on weekends and during special events like Fantasy Fest. If that’s not your scene, explore the side streets—Petronia, Simonton, and Whitehead—where you’ll find quieter bars and better conversations.

Most bars stay open until 2 a.m. or later, and the party atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. Key West attracts everyone, and the nightlife reflects that diversity.
