Busch Gardens Tampa Bay stands apart from Florida’s other major theme parks. Yes, it delivers some of the state’s most thrilling roller coasters, but it also gives you eye-to-eye encounters with giraffes, cheetahs, and hundreds of other animals across a beautifully landscaped 335-acre African-themed park. If you’re planning your first visit, here’s how to make the most of it.

When to Visit and How to Get There

Busch Gardens sits in north Tampa at 10165 McKinley Drive, about 90 minutes from Orlando and 20 minutes from downtown Tampa. The park typically sees smaller crowds on weekdays, especially Tuesday through Thursday. Summer brings longer hours and special events, but also Florida heat and afternoon thunderstorms. March through May and September through November offer the best balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds.

The park opens at 10 a.m. most days, with extended hours during peak seasons and special events like Howl-O-Scream in fall and Christmas Town in winter. Arriving 30 minutes before opening lets you park, get through the gates, and hit popular rides before the lines build.

The Coasters You Can’t Miss

Busch Gardens has earned its reputation among coaster enthusiasts. Iron Gwazi, North America’s tallest and fastest hybrid coaster, launches riders 206 feet into the air and hits speeds of 76 mph. It’s intense, unforgettable, and often has the longest wait times—ride it first thing or late in the day.

SheiKra drops you 200 feet straight down at a 90-degree angle, while Montu, one of the world’s tallest and longest inverted coasters, whips you through seven inversions. Cheetah Hunt races along the park’s Serengeti Plain, giving you views of the animals while accelerating through three separate launches. Tigris and Cobra’s Curse round out the lineup with their own unique twists.

If you’re traveling with younger kids or prefer gentler rides, head to Sesame Street Safari of Fun, where Elmo and friends welcome families with age-appropriate attractions and play areas.

Animal Encounters and the Serengeti Plain

What sets Busch Gardens apart is the seamless blend of thrills and wildlife. The Serengeti Plain spreads across 65 acres and houses more than 150 animals including zebras, rhinos, antelopes, and ostriches. The Serengeti Safari tour takes you onto the plain in an open-air truck for up-close animal interactions—book this early in your visit as spots fill quickly.

At Edge of Africa, walk-through habitats put you face-to-face with lions, hyenas, meerkats, and vultures. The Myombe Reserve is home to western lowland gorillas and chimpanzees in a lush rainforest setting. Don’t skip Jungala, where you can watch Sumatran tigers play and cool off in their pool.

Animal Care Center experiences let you feed giraffes, touch stingrays, and learn from keepers. These add-on experiences cost extra but deliver memorable moments, especially for animal lovers.

Food, Tips, and Making the Most of Your Day

Unlike some Florida parks where dining options feel like an afterthought, Busch Gardens offers solid variety. Zambia Smokehouse serves barbecue platters, while Dragon Fire Grill in Pantopia dishes out grilled favorites. The Crown Colony Cafe overlooking the Serengeti Plain combines decent food with spectacular animal-watching views.

Bring sunscreen and reapply it—much of the park has limited shade. Wear comfortable walking shoes; you’ll easily log several miles navigating the sprawling grounds. The Skyride gondola system provides a scenic shortcut from one end of the park to the other and gives your feet a rest.

Consider Quick Queue Unlimited if you’re visiting on a busy day or want to maximize your coaster count. The single-rider lines on major attractions can also cut wait times significantly.

Water bottles are allowed, and free ice water is available at food locations. In summer, take advantage of air-conditioned animal habitats and shows during the hottest afternoon hours, then return to coasters as temperatures drop.

Busch Gardens delivers a full day of entertainment that you won’t find replicated anywhere else in Florida. It’s thrilling, beautiful, and surprisingly educational—a combination that keeps visitors coming back.
