The stretch of Atlantic coast between Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton offers some of Southeast Florida’s most beautiful beaches, charming waterfront neighborhoods, and excellent dining—all connected by a scenic coastal route perfect for a leisurely day trip. This 25-mile journey takes you through Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Pompano Beach, Deerfield Beach, and into upscale Boca Raton, with plenty of stops worth your time.

Plan on a full day to make the most of this drive. You’ll find less crowded beaches than Miami, better parking, and a more laid-back vibe that lets you experience the South Florida coast at a relaxed pace.

Starting Point: Fort Lauderdale Beach and Las Olas

Begin your day at Fort Lauderdale Beach, where A1A runs right along the sand. The beachfront promenade stretches for more than two miles, lined with cafes, shops, and palm trees. Arrive early for easier parking at one of the metered lots along the strip.

If you’re hungry before hitting the road, grab breakfast on Las Olas Boulevard, just a few blocks west. This tree-canopied street is Fort Lauderdale’s premier dining and shopping district, with everything from casual cafes to upscale bistros. The boulevard connects downtown to the beach, crossing the Intracoastal Waterway where you can watch yachts glide by.

Before leaving Fort Lauderdale, consider a morning Fort Lauderdale Sightseeing Cruise with Sandbar Swim Stop to see the city’s famous canals and waterfront mansions—though if you’re pressed for time, save it for another visit and head north.

Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and Pompano Beach

Just five miles north on A1A, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea feels like a throwback to old Florida. This small beach town has no high-rises—just low-rise hotels, mom-and-pop motels, and a charming main street (Commercial Boulevard) that ends right at the beach. Park in the public lot near Anglin’s Fishing Pier, one of the few remaining piers in Broward County.

The pier extends 875 feet into the Atlantic and costs just a few dollars to walk. Below the pier, the coral reef sits close to shore—you can actually snorkel from the beach here. Bring your own gear or rent from one of the nearby dive shops. The reef attracts tropical fish, sea turtles, and occasional rays.

Continue north to Pompano Beach, where the recently renovated pier and beach park offer clean facilities, showers, and a casual restaurant with ocean views. The beach here tends to be less crowded than Fort Lauderdale, making it ideal for spreading out a towel and relaxing.

Deerfield Beach to Boca Raton

Deerfield Beach marks the transition from Broward County into Palm Beach County. The International Fishing Pier here is the longest in South Florida at 976 feet, and the surrounding park has ample free parking—a rarity along this coast. The beach is wide and well-maintained, with lifeguards on duty year-round.

From Deerfield, A1A continues north through a more residential stretch before reaching South Beach Park in Boca Raton. This beach features a large parking area, pavilions, and picnic spots shaded by Australian pines. The water here is typically calm, perfect for swimming.

For your final stop, head to Red Reef Park just north of South Beach Park. This 67-acre oceanfront park combines a natural reef close to shore with walking trails through coastal hammock. The reef is excellent for snorkeling, and the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center sits right next door—a free attraction with sea turtle rehabilitation tanks, a butterfly garden, and a boardwalk through mangrove wetlands.

Where to Eat and When to Go

Timing matters on this drive. Start early to avoid crowds and the strongest midday sun. Late fall through early spring offers the best weather, with lower humidity and minimal rain. Summer brings afternoon thunderstorms, but mornings are usually clear.

For lunch, stop at one of the waterfront restaurants in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea or Pompano Beach. Many serve fresh-caught fish sandwiches and cold beer with ocean views. In Boca Raton, Mizner Park—about two miles west of the beach—offers upscale dining and shopping in a Mediterranean-style outdoor plaza.

The entire drive takes only 45 minutes without stops, but you’ll want at least five or six hours to enjoy the beaches, walk the piers, and grab a meal. Parking ranges from free at some locations to $3-5 per hour at beach lots. Bring quarters for meters, though many now accept credit cards.

This stretch of coast shows you a different side of Southeast Florida—less frantic than Miami Beach, more accessible than some of the Treasure Coast beaches farther north. It’s Florida at its most enjoyable: sunshine, clean beaches, and that easy Atlantic breeze that reminds you why people have been coming here for generations.
